The students of Matara Kotuwa President College took the lead throughout the event organized for the opening of the new school building. With the limited resources they have, the students and the staff of the school had made a great effort for the success of the day under the guidance of their Principal. The cultural show was the most striking event where the students presented their talent enhanced by committed practice. After the official inauguration, the students presented the musical ballet which depicted how Tsunami affected their lives which was followed by an orchestra on eastern music, two other folk dancing performances and most importantly reading of a thanking note in Spanish.
The students were able to present this cultural show, because of the new assembly hall in the newly built school building. The hall accommodated the parents of these students, the teachers and the invitees to the inauguration. The two storied n
ew school building comprised of class rooms, assembly hall, space for a library, two female and two male toilets with pipe borne water and a proper sewerage system. The students have already started their classes in the new class rooms and the new library space will soon be open for the students after the library is arranged.
The Principal of the President College highly appreciated the support of Diputación de Huelva, UNDP AGSL and the provincial and local authorities for providing the students of the school, a better learning environment. However, the school is still in need of further assistance from the provincial and local authorities to get sufficient resources for the thousand eight hundred students who are currently studying in the school.
Representing the school, the Principal of the school Mr. Subasinghe presented a souvenir to the Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP – Ms. Zoe Keeler, as an appreciation of the intervention by Diputacion de Huelva within the framework of UNDP and AGSL. The Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP highlighted that AGSL Pragramme was established in Southern Province to support the rebuilding efforts of Tsunami promoting participation of different stakeholders in the development of the Province. She identified this project, the construction of the new school building, as one such initiative.
