Universities have an important role to play in local, national and global development processes. The University of Ruhuna and the University of Uva Wellassa being the Southern Province’s and Uva Provinces academic institution respectively, have the responsibility of forming present and future generations of development leaders and managers in an increasingly knowledge-based society and to engage with governments to help defining policy options.
A strong alliance between the Universities and the UNDP AGSL will lead to the generation of knowledge and policy options for human development in Southern and Uva Provinces.

AGSL is currently working together with the UWU in the local economic development project which focus on the inland fishery communities in Monaragal and Badulla. UWU has introduced a strategic approach to improve the capacity of fishing communities aiming at increasing the inland fish production in Uva. Amongst the expertise provided by the University, it includes technical support in making fry-fingerling cages design and establish twelve in two appropriate reservoirs, select suitable tanks, asses the socio-economic situation of the fishing community and the status of the fish catch in the tank, transfer the technical know-how on the fry-fingerling raring process to the fishery community and the extension staff of the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAqDA). Besides, the university will be monitoring the process during the project period.
AGSL will continue to work in collaboration with the Uva Wellassa University to further support the human development of Uva Province.
