Awareness Programme for Nilwala River Bank Conservation in Athuraliya
Under the Nilwala river bank conservation project of AGSL in the Southern Province, an awareness programme was conducted on 6th of August 2009 in the Divisional Secretary office in Athuraliya, Matara. The awareness focused on three main topics: importance of river bank conservation, the project implementation and the use of river bank conservation techniques according to the Land ordinance of Sri Lanka.
Navoda Environment Conservation Society (NECS) organized the awareness programme in order to make the community based organisations and the community in Aturaliya aware on the overall aspects concerning river bank conservation. In detail the programme concentrated on the following aspects of river bank conservation: river environment problems, water pollution, physical and natural effects on the river, seepage of ground water, area defined as ‘river bank reservation’ devastation, methods of rehabilitation, natural materials and bio techniques of river bank conservation.

The resource persons for the programme were Mr. Jagath Fernanado, Senior Lecture of University of Ruhuna; Mr. Chandana Thilakarthna, Divisional Secretary of Akuressa; Mr. Mahinda Ranasingha, Project Officer of NECS. The thorough knowledge and the experience of these resource persons on river bank conservation was an immense support to carry out the sessions successfully. A post evaluation of the workshop was also carried out by NECS to identify the areas of improvement and the practical experiences required on the river bank conservation techniques.

There were around forty participants in the programme representing Athuraliya DS office, Panadugama Nilwala Environment Society, Athuraliya Environment Society, Panadugama Farmer Society, Samurdhi office, Agrarian Department, Forestry Department and the community in Athuraliya. The participants were motivated by knowledge gained and highlighted the importance of knowing the environment conservation and its importance.

The Divisional Secretary of Athuraliya, Vice Chairman and the Project officers of NECS, the Provincial Coordinator of AGSL and the Subject officer of AGSL also participated in the programme.

Under the Nilwala river bank conservation project, AGSL supports to transfer innovative local techniques that has been tested and supported under UNDP Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) to the local communities and authorities of Matara upon their request.
