| Italian Mental Health Delegation visits Uva Province |

| Paz y Desarrollo and AGSL Partnership: a Shelter Home in the Southern Province for victims/survivors of Gender Based Violence |
The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed on the 21st October 2009 between the Divisional Secretariat of Matara and the Women in Need organisation, in support of the establishment of a shelter home in the Southern Province for women and children victims/survivors of Gender Based Violence.  |

| Ruhuna Economic Development Agency... the Technical Mission to Europe |
Within the framework of UNDP ART Programme, the representatives of Ruhuna Economic Development Agency (RUEDA) went on a technical mission to Spain and Italy with the objective of sharing experiences on Local Economic Development Agencies (LEDAs) of the two countries. Comprised of seven representatives, the mission delegation from Sri Lanka arrived in Spain on 26th September for the thirteen day mission.  |

| Creating a better learning environment in Matara Kotuwa President College: Huelva-Matara Partnership |
The opening of the new school building of Kotuwa President College in Matara, a project supported by Diputacion de Huelva under AGSL Programme, took place on 22nd September 2009 with the participation of the honourable Minister of Educational Services, Assistant Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), other local authorities and the representatives of UNDP AGSL. The opening proceeded with a cultural show presented by the students of Kotuwa President College, Matara whose performance depicted their talent.  |

| Technical Training for farmers of Bee keeping in Badulla |
Second phase of the training programmes of the Bee keeping support project which is being implemented under joint partnership between UNDP and Ceylon Biscuit Limited (CBL) will commence on 28th September 2009 onwards.  |

| Upgrading Haldummulla community water supply system |
A community awarenes programme was held on 07th September 2009 at Bathgoda Community Hall on the planned Halldummulla water project. Officials of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board of Bandarawela, Haludummula Pradeshiya Sabha, Divisional Secretariate and Public Health Inspector and the members of the community participated for this programme.  |

| University of Uva Wellassa and AGSL Partnership: working together for the human development of Uva Province |
The Uva Wellassa University and AGSL agreed to engage in a partnership to jointly work towards the common goal of furthering the development in Uva Province. The framework partnership document, the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on 8th September 2009.  |

| Integrated Coastal Management in Rekawa: focus group discussions |
Due to its environmental sensitivity, Rekawa was brought under a Special Area Management process by the Coast Conservation Department. The University of Ruhuna is currently undertaking various studies in that area and is, with the support of AGSL, establishing a Coordinating Committee to deal with multi-stakeholder issues in the zone.  |

UNDP ART GOLD Sri Lanka (AGSL) organized an exposure visit on 7th and 8th of September of Land Registrar Officers from Uva Province to the Land Registrar Offices (LRO) in the Southern Province.  |

| Creating a better learning environment at the Preschools in Kotapola, Matara |
Twenty five preschools in Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha in Matara district were provided with preschool equipment (musical instruments) on 27th August, 2009 in Matara. AGSL supports these selected twenty five schools to enhance their facilities and become well-equipped preschools making the learning environment appealing for children.  |

| RUEDA participatory strategic planning workshop |
On the 24th and 25th of August, RUEDA - the Ruhuna Local Economic Development Agency - held a two days workshop with representatives of its members organization, in order to identify the strategic focus of the Agency and the main areas where it would concentrate its activities. The active participation of the members – including some of the main institutional and economic actors in the Southern Province - made this a successful and stimulating workshop.  |

| Awareness Programme for Nilwala River Bank Conservation in Athuraliya |
Under the Nilwala river bank conservation project of AGSL in the Southern Province, an awareness programme was conducted on 6th of August 2009 in the Divisional Secretary office in Athuraliya, Matara. The awareness focused on three main topics: importance of river bank conservation, the project implementation and the use of river bank conservation techniques according to the Land ordinance of Sri Lanka.  |

| Partnership for a better cause: RUEDA members awarded for their outstanding achievements |
Ruhuna Economic Development Agency (RUEDA) as a local economic development institute works towards territorial economic development through networking the public, private and civil society organizations in the Southern Province. Three executive member organizations of RUEDA, Matara Municipal Council, Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce and Kotapola Multi Purpose Cooperative society were recently recognized at the international level for their outstanding achievements.  |

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 28th July between the Secretary of the Provincial Ministry of Power and UNDP AGSL Uva Province for the establishment of the mini-hydro power plant in Udaweriya estate community in Badulla district.  |
