There will be a discussion on the importance of introducing organic fertilizer production as an alternative income generation activity and the ecotourism in Rekawa area on 3rd November 2009. Within the partnership between the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Ruhuna and UNDP AGSL, the project on reviving the Integrated Coastal Management process in Rekawa is being implemented. The project aims at the re-establishment of the Special Area Management (SAM) process in Rekawa to guarantee an integrated costal management of the extremely rich biodiversity of the Hambantota District coast line. SAM is a strategy designed by the Revised Coastal Zone Management Plan of Sri Lanka to cope with the impact of the individual resource use and the conflicts arise out of the multi stakeholder problem. The main activities in this project are to re-establish the Rekawa Special Area Management Co-coordinating Committee which will coordinate the overall planning process of SAM and the elaboration of a common coastal development plan for the area. The focus of the initiatives will be to strengthen the collective action taken for the sustainable use of coastal zone resources.
