Two awareness programmes on Biogas units will be conducted at Base Hospital Udugama and Kamburupitiya Base Hospital on 5th November and 18th November, 2009 respectively. These are the first sessions of the four awareness programmes each planned to be conducted at the two hospitals.
Following the request of the Provincial Ministry of Alternative Energy, AGSL agreed to support to construct two Biogas units for Galle and Matara districts in 2009 under AGSL South’s environment component. Following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September, the construction of Biogas units in the Base hospitals Udugama in Galle and Kamburupitiya in Matara commenced on 20th and 21st October 2009. The waste management has been a critical problem for both of these Base hospitals. The Municipal Council and the hospital authorities did not have a sustainable solution for this waste problem. Therefore, the main benefit of the proposed biogas unit is that it gives a sustainable waste management solution for the hospitals and also introduces an alternative energy sources for sustainable energy usage. The Biogas unit at Base Hospital Udugama in Galle will be constructed with the support of Human and Environment Links Progressive Organization (HELP-O), while the Southern Provincial Development Authority (SPDA) is partnering with AGSL to support the initiative at the Kamburupitiya Base Hospital, Matara.
