Environment: Construction of Biogas units in Galle and Matara
Start Date : 10/20/2009
End Date : 10/21/2009
Time : 10:00:00 AM
Location : Galle and Matara

Southern Province is concerned in introducing sustainable waste management solutions and to find alternative energy in high energy consumption units in the territory. Following the request of the Provincial Ministry of Alternative Energy, AGSL agreed to support to construct two Biogas units for Galle and Matara districts for 2009 under AGSL South’s environment component. Following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September, the construction of Biogas units in the Base hospitals Udugama in Galle and Kamburupitiya in Matara will commence on 20th and 21st October 2009. The waste management has been a critical problem for both of these Base hospitals. The Municipal Council and the hospital authorities did not have a sustainable solution for this waste problem. Therefore, the main benefit of the proposed biogas unit is that it gives a sustainable waste management solution for the hospitals and also introduces an alternative energy sources for sustainable energy usage.

This unit will be constructed with the support of Human and Environment Links Progressive Organization (HELP-O). The construction will begin on 20th October 2009. Help-O has constructed nine biogas units in Galle, out of these two units for hospital. They also conduct technical awareness and maintenance programmes.
