Under the Nilwala river bank conservation project, AGSL supports to transfer innovative local techniques that has been tested and supported under UNDP Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) to the local communities and authorities of Matara upon their request. River bank rehabilitation is a very specialized environmental (and social) subject with very little success stories yet to be shown in the country. However, Navoda Environment Conservation Society jointly with UNDP SGP has been able to achieve success in Deduru oya conservation project. The NCES has specialized knowledge about the subject and has been successful in introducing Bio Engineering Technology for the first time in Sri Lanka to address the river bank erosion issues. The pilot projects that the NCES introduced have successful result and the Society has been requested by authorities of other parts of the Island to introduce these methods for similar initiatives.
AGSL supports to promote innovative community based technology in river bank conservation, transfer of knowledge and is has identified potential scope of widen its application in the Southern Province.
