Culture and Heritage

Renowned for its unique cultural legacy of 2500 years heritage, Sri Lankan culture is the embodiment of the diversity of its community and nature intact. The art, music, dancing and performing art of Sri Lanka are derived from the mysterious elements of nature inherent. The traditional agricultural life style of the civilization adapted to the natural course of life set the atmosphere to form folk dancing and music relating to their immediate surroundings. The classical dance forms are in harmony with various rituals and ceremonies whereas the local traditions mark up the regional differences. The art and craft, another essential characteristic of Sri Lankan culture, evolved from the regional to national forms as the kingdom shifted from region to region. The different religions on the other hand have contributed immensely on the multifaceted culture. These unique and traditional forms of cultural expressions are risked to disappear since finding a successor and physical space to carry out the old age tradition is far more difficult.

With its regional art, music and dance forms and the archeological sites in the Southern Province (SP) contributes immensely to the historical and cultural legacy of Sri Lanka. AGSL recognizes the potential of ‘culture’ in human development and support the Southern Province to preserve and to promote its cultural value.

AGSL’s intervention focuses on the areas of ‘Cultural activities’ and ‘Archaeological Heritage’.
