Local Economic Development (LED)
Through its Local Economic Development (LED) component, AGSL aims at building up the economic capacity of the Uva and the Southern Province to improve the economic future and the quality of life for all. LED is a process by which public, private and non-governmental sector partners work collectively to create better conditions for economic sustainable growth, employment generation and enhancing competitiveness.
Although the Southern and Uva Provinces have much economic potential, this potential has yet to be fully exploited to develop the economies of these regions.
In Uva and Southern Province agriculture plays a major role in the provincial economy. A wide range of agricultural commodities like tea, rubber, coconut, cinnamon, paddy, pulses, vegetables, fruits, other crops, animal husbandry, fisheries etc. are being produced. The wide variation of agricultural output can be attributed to the agro-climatic diversity in both provinces. Other sectors like tourism, manufacturing and wholesale have great potential to boost the local economy, though such opportunities have not yet been fully utilized.
Through its LED approach, AGSL works closely with various stakeholders in different areas to jointly work towards the improvement of the local economy.
